Consultation on outreach service in Blackawton

Post Office Ltd wants to close the Blackawton branch and introduce an outreach service

20th May 2008

Post Office Ltd has launched a six-week consultation for a proposed outreach service for Blackawton.

The proposal is part of its network change programme to modernise and reshape its network of branches.

"Possible types of outreach service in Blackawton could include a mobile service visiting the village at set times, a hosted service operated within third party premises for restricted hours each week, a partner service within the premises of a local partner (such as a pub landlord) or a home service were services are ordered in advance for delivery direct to the customer at home," Post Office Ltd said in a statement.

The proposal follows the decision by Post Office Ltd to close the Blackawton branch and introduce an outreach service.

The six-week public consultation into the proposal begins on May 20 and ends on June 20.

Tim Nickolls, network development manager for Devon, said: "We welcome feedback from the local community during the six week consultation and look forward to receiving comments on the days and hours being suggested.

"The purpose of this public consultation is to ensure that we have the best available local knowledge to allow us to make the most informed decisions about which branches should close or be replaced by an outreach service."

Postwatch, the independent postal watchdog, has encouraged people to join in the public consultation.

Nerina Bowdenhamer, from Postwatch, said: "It has been proven that because of public input some changes have been made to proposals and in very few cases some of these post offices closures have been withdrawn."

Post Office branches in the nearby villages of West Charleton and Kellaton have been earmarked for possible closure.

Updated information about the consultation will appear here on 999Blackawton in the coming weeks.
